Cienfuegos Region

Cienfuegos is located in the south-central region of Cuba, 340 km east of Havana.

The region offers many diverse activities; mountain walking, hiking and water sports being the most significant. Its prime geography and high temperatures for most of the year have made the region an almost irresistible place for those who opt for nature tourism.

Among the 8 townships that make-up the region, the main highlight is definitely the capital, Cienfuegos, also known as the "Pearl of the South". Other places to consider include Cumanayagua, Abreus, Cruces and Lajas.

The cheapest way to get here from Habana is by the Viazul bus Agency and costs around 20 CUC each way. Private taxis are priced between 90 and 120 CUC.

Cienfuegos (Capital)

Avenida de CienfuegosUndoubtedly, the greatest attraction is Cienfuegos, capital city and the only settlement in Cuba founded by French colonists - back in 1819. It is also known as The Pearl of the South.

The highlight of this beautiful city is its attractive old town with buildings that keep alive a traditional atmosphere and the high architectural value of French inspiration, integrating old and modern buildings, a quality that resulted in the award of World Heritage Site in 2005.

Cienfuegos Botanical Gardens

Cienfuegos Jardin BotanicoA National Monument of Cuba for over 110 years, featuring 94 hectares this is widely considered among the best gardens in the world. More than 450 species are on display, including exotic plants, huge jagueyes, leguminous and bamboo plants, as well as a collection of 265 species of palm tree.

The gardens are located less than 15 kilometers from the city of Cienfuegos. The trip from the capital costs 10 CUC.


The Escambray mountain massif is located within the territory of the three central regions. The famous Martin Infierno Cave stands at about 56 kilometers from Cienfuegos.

The cave is home to the highest stalagmite in Cuba with a diameter of 30 meters at the base and height of 67,2m. It is located 90 meters underground, in the largest of the five natural rooms available which stand at about 600 meters above sea level.

El Nicho

El nicho en CienfuegoLocated 46 kilometers from the capital it offers a natural setting to enjoy the scenery of the Escambray Mountains, its wildlife and nature. Tourists are welcome to visit the area for trekking trips. El Nicho is ideal for lovers of outdoor sports. The greatest attraction is El Nicho waterfall with its cascades, ponds and natural pools.

From Cienfuegos you can make the excursion for a fee of 30 CUC.

Guanaroca Lagoon

Southeast of the bay sits a natural reserve where you can enjoy spectacular views and incredible wildlife. Boat trips are also available around the lagoon.

The geographyaround the town of Cumanayagua is of special interest and you´ll find the highest elevation of the region: Peak San Juan, 1140 meters above sea level.


Playa Rancho Luna CienfuegosLapped by the waters of the Caribbean Sea, the most important beaches are Rancho Luna and Inglés Beach.

One of the attractions of Rancho Luna is the show at the Dolphinarium. Tickets are 5 CUC per person, 20 CUC for kissing the dolphins and 30 CUC for a swim with the friendly animals.

The area is ideal for diving and snorkelling, mainly in the stretch between the entrance channel to Jagua and Boca Ambuila Bay. In this area is located the famous coral column Notre Dame (six meters high and named for its extraordinary structural similarity with the famous Parisian cathedral). In addition, there are over 50 diving spots for snorkeling where it is possible to view sunken ships.

Other locations

It is worth mentioning the festivals that are an essential part of the city in Santa Isabel de las Lajas, founded in 1824, where music, dance and colourful dress have made the famous local celebrations an unmissable event for visitors.

Worth visiting is the Benny Moré City Museum opened in 1982 and located in the Urban Historical Center. It contains a tribute to the life and achievements of this distinguished musician best known for "The Barbarian of Rhythm".
