What to visit in Cienfuegos

There are many reasons why Cienfuegos has become one of the most outstanding regions of the country dating back to the 19th century, and this is mostly due to the historical and patrimonial legacy that today are merged into the heritage of a full-of-history and reborn city.

Tomás Terry Theater, 19th century

Teatro Tomás Terry en CienfuegosIt is one of the three most important theaters built on the Island over the last century. It is also across from Martí Park, on the corner of Avenue 56 and 27 Street. Declared a National Monument, it is one of the most elegant eclectic buildings in Cienfuegos. See location

Martí Park (former Plaza de Armas (Arms Square)

It has the only Arch of Triumph existing in Cuba, 1902. See location

Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción Cathedral, 1819

Located across from Parque Martí (park). Of a neoclassical facade with two high asymmetric bell towers. See location

El Palatino, 1842.

The oldest building in the surroundings of Martí Park. In the beginning of the 20th century it housed a restaurant, café and candy store. It was a night meeting center for intellectuals and artists. At the moment it is the El Palatino snack bar. See location

Casa de los Leones (House of Lions)

casa de los leones en CienfuegosLocated on Paseo del Prado it is a house from the 19th century which has figures of lions in iron decorating the portals. These sculptoric works were made in approximately 1862. See location

El Palacio de Gobierno (former Ayuntamiento - city hall)

Striking construction across from José Martí Park. It was the scene of the revolutionary events of September 5th,1957. It is the headquarters of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power. See location

Provincial Museum of Cienfuegos

2702, 54 Avenue between 27 and 29 Streets. Housed in a colonial house from the end of the 19th century. Among the most remarkable collections are the sculptures of Mateo Torriente Bécquer, architectural elements, paintings, drawings, furniture, numismatics, outstanding art gallery and photographic library, as well as documentary collections of great value. See location

Paseo del Prado (Prado Walk)

Having a length of almost two kilometers, it is the most extensive walk in Cuba. It stretches from the entrance of the city to the Malecón (seafront) and is one of the most important roads of the city, flanked by constructions of excellent architecture. Ver situación

Punta Gorda

punta gorda cienfuegosHeadland which extends from the beginning of the seafront (Malecón) and goes right into the bay. A mainly residential area with gorgeous constructions, among them the Palacio de Valle, Hotel Jagua and some beautiful wooden houses very well preserved. See location

Palacio de Blanco (palace), 1871

54 Avenue between 33 and 35 Streets. One of the most beautiful residences built out of Havana during the 19th century. It was declared Local Monument, it is the headquarters of the Palacio de Artesanía (Crafts Palace).

Reina Cemetery, 1839

Located in the Reina neighborhood, in the area of Punta Majagua, where the town was founded. Vertical niches (deep recesses in a wall used as tombs) and traditional graves from the 19th century still survive. Today it is closed to the public. See location

Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Jagua Fortress(1743-1745)

It used to protect the access to the bay of Jagua. It is the only Spanish military fortress built at the end of the 18th century in the Renaissance style. It was declared a National Monument in 1978 and inaugurated as a museum in 1998.

Tomás Acea Cemetery, inaugurated in 1926

Cementerio Tomas Acea CienfuegosThe only garden cemetery in Cuba, declared a National Monument in 1978 for its environmental, historical, architectural and artistic values. It is located about four (4) kilometers from the city if you are traveling along the former Carretera de Junco (Junco Road), today called Avenida 5 de septiembre (September 5th Ave.). The inhumation of the mortal remains of Don Luis de Clouet, founder of the city, took place in 2009 . His remains were placed in a funeral tumulus. See location

Botanical Garden

Declared a National Monument in 1989, the Centenarian institution which offers the visitor a wide collection of plants made up of around a thousand and 450 species, 80% of which are exotic. It holds a collection of palm trees which are considered among the 10 most important in the world. With 97 hectares, it is situated about fifteen (15) kilometers from the city of Cienfuegos. Former Carolina Sugarmill

Founded in 1835 on the north coast of the Bay of Cienfuegos by the American William Hood. A part of the machineries of the sugarmill are still preserved in the same place as they were a 100 years ago. See location

El Nicho

El Nicho CienfuegosA beautiful natural place situated between Cienfuegos and Trinidad. With tens of waterfalls and natural ponds in an area of practically virgin vegetation, hiden in the mountains. Described as a heavenly place for its exuberant flora and fauna, its rivers and waterfalls, as well as several picturesque country villages nestled in the region. Rural bridges allows visitors to ascend to the lookout from where you can enjoy extraordinary views. See location

Naval Historical Museum (Cayo Loco (Coconut Key)

The only naval museum in Cuba, situated on the edges of the bay. Cayo Coco (Coconut Key) is a place surrounded by mystery and popular legend. The museum shows the development of fishing, the port, business, and nautical activities, as well as the historical events of September 5th of 1957. See location

Martín Infierno Cave

Located in the Cumanayagua municipality. In the cave is found the highest stalagmite in Cuba and one of the biggest in the world, with 67.2 metres, acording to measurement of the Speleologic Society of Cuba. See location     

Rancho Luna Beach
