Valley of the Sugar Mills (Valle de los Ingenios)

valle los ingenios CubaAround 4 Kms from the city you can find San Luis Valley (El Valle de San Luis), also called the Valley of Sugar Mills, where at the beginning of the 19th century there were 48 sugar mills in production, whose ruins are visited today by thousands of tourists who also admire the facade of the Tower of Iznaga (Torre de Iznaga), built by Iznaga to make sure that the slaves would work hard in his estate.

A steam train dating from 1907 makes a daily excursion around the valley for 10 CUC, with departures from Trinidad (9:35 a.m.)

Another option consists of a Trip on a 4x4 jeep around the Valley of the Sugar Mills, a World Cultural Heritage site. Located 22 kilometers from the city of Trinidad, the climatic conditions here are exceptional with parameters of environmental welfare over 60 percent, the average air temperature is between 16 and 25 degrees Celsius, the relative humidity is 85 percent and the maximum wind speed is 11,6 Km/h.

Perforated grottoes in their almost vertical faults, open valleys with subterranean drain, fast-flow narrow rivers, and beautiful waterfalls and cascades like Caburní, a National Monument, are attractions worth visiting. A wide variety of ferns, medicinal plants, wild orchids and butterfly lilies complement the delightful environment. Vacationers choosing this destination can also visit the Codina Park, Guanayara and Los Almendros, unique experiences leading through complex networks of caves cleaved by underground rivers and paths surrounded by curative ornamental plants.

No doubt, the paths in the mountains will take the visitors by surprise, with waterfalls of up to 60 meters high (among the biggest on the island), together with crystal-clear water pools fed by nearby springs.
